Since they are unavoidable, Mattie struggles to learn how to survive the burning sickness, and how to deal with all of the deaths. This book is powerful and effective, bringing out the ugliest in all diseases. It shows compassion, sorrow, and love in a time of tragedy, and is a novel written close to heart. Set in the old days, it gives a taste of the past, and also an scary look at what can come.
